In September 2023, Wendy and her young son, Allen, arrived at Good Counsel Riverside, seeking refuge from an overcrowded living situation. Before coming to Good Counsel, Wendy had been sharing a one-bedroom apartment with her sister, her sister's partner, and their two children. With so many people in such a small space, Wendy knew she needed a better environment to raise Allen.
At Good Counsel, Wendy and Allen found more than just shelter—they found a supportive community. Good Counsel provides homeless and abused mothers and their children with a safe, family-style home. Each mother receives her own room, creating a stable environment to care for her child. Wendy has access to case management services, life skills training, and driving lessons, all part of Good Counsel’s holistic approach to helping mothers achieve independence. A special grant was recently obtained to pay for continuing education classes, including driving lessons, which has been crucial for Wendy as she works toward her goal of becoming more self-sufficient.
Good Counsel also helps mothers like Wendy pursue education and meaningful employment. They offer free onsite childcare while mothers attend school or work, empowering them to move forward. Wendy currently works part-time and is actively seeking full-time employment, with hopes of owning a car one day to better support her family.
Meanwhile, Allen is thriving in this nurturing environment. A happy and healthy little boy, he loves giving hugs and proudly reciting numbers and letters throughout the home.
Even after a mother moves out, Good Counsel remains a lifeline, staying in contact to ensure no mother has to face life’s challenges alone. Wendy and Allen are on their way to a brighter future, supported by a community dedicated to helping families build lasting stability and hope.
