I am currently in Australia, in the countryside near the Gold Coast, where, according to the weather forecasts, we are expecting to get hit by Cyclone Alfred some time in/over the next few days or week. As of this morning, we lost electricity, together with the internet. We only have a battery-powered internet-providing device (I have no idea how anything to do with the internet really works) which apparently uses the phone line, hence my ability to email you now. If the phone lines go the same way as the power lines, as is somewhat likely to happen, I will have no internet access, and as it is, I have no means of charging my laptop. The house I am staying in is already cut off from the nearest town; the bridge on the only road out is underwater. The locals here say from experience of past storms and floods that we could be out of power here for a week, and out of internet access for up to 6 months, thanks to the extensive damage and chaos caused throughout the whole region.
