Excitement abounds here at Good Counsel with the news of Mia Rose’s birth marking the 1,000 baby born since Good Counsel began its mission over 30 year years ago. We’re sure her mom was the most excited of all. Genesis came to Good Counsel with her son, Noah, when she was just a few weeks pregnant. Remembering her initial feelings when she came to Good Counsel, Genesis said, “I was scared and nervous. When I first came, it was all new for me.”
Genesis’ feelings are pretty common for the women who knock on our door – most have lost hope, have little or no support, and are very anxious about what is going to happen to them and their baby. While awaiting Mia’s arrival, Genesis stayed busy attending Life Skills classes, working as a waitress, and preparing for a new life. She met with her case manager weekly to make plans and set goals for her future and the future of her family. Genesis’ older son, Noah, was busy too - working hard at Little Smarties Preschool. He recently celebrated “Stepping Up” day, donning his cap and gown with pride and accepting his Certificate of Achievement. Noah is looking forward to starting kindergarten in the upcoming school year and he loves being a big brother to Mia saying, "I can't wait to show her things!"
In the next weeks Genesis and Mia will spend time bonding and all three will settle into their new life as a family. Genesis will continue to take steps toward an independent and stable life after Good Counsel. She plans on returning to school to obtain her GED. Reflecting on her time at Good Counsel, Genesis said, “One of my favorite days was Thanksgiving. It felt like I was a part of a family. Everybody was so united.” The feeling of family is always at the forefront of what we do because Good Counsel is so much more than a shelter; it is a home offering love, hope, and encouragement. We see the positive impact of our family atmosphere every day as women who were once despairing now look to the future with hope. Genesis said it best, “The women here are very driven, young, devoted mothers who want nothing but the best for themselves and their children.”
