21-year-old Michelle is an inspiration. The 1,200 mile journey that brought her to Good Counsel did not dampen her determination. Now, her perseverance is paying off!
Michelle was living in Florida with the father of her baby, Laylaniz, who was born in May. Sadly, and all too common with the women we serve, Michelle’s living situation became violent and she had to flee for the safety of herself and her baby girl. She finally made it to her mother’s home in New Jersey. However, because her mother lives in a 55+ community, Michelle’s time there was limited. Now what?
That’s when she reached out to Good Counsel and was immediately accepted into the program. Michelle came into the program as her House Manager said, “with both feet on the ground.” She quickly enrolled in the Rockland Community College Continuing Education Program with the goal of becoming a Phlebotomy Technician. With the support and guidance of her Case Manager, Michelle completed 90 hours of required training and earned her Phlebotomy Technician Certificate. Just recently, Michelle finished an internship at Good Samaritan Hospital. While in school and during her internship, Michelle worked at Lord & Taylor without worry about childcare for her baby girl because Good Counsel was there for her. This past week, she sat for the National Healthcareer Association exam and is anxiously awaiting the results. We have a pretty good idea, the results will be good!
Michelle is a shining example of what can happen when a young mother, homeless, and perhaps hopeless, is given the support, guidance, and encouragement she needs to succeed in life. When a woman in Michelle’s unfortunate situation hears the message, “you can do this, and we’re going to help” - miracles happen.
Michelle is now excited and looking forward to the future. She feels proud for setting and obtaining all of the goals she had set. The success she’s had while at Good Counsel lays the foundation for future success and allows her to imagine and plan for a future without fear. Michelle’s next goal is to get an apartment for herself and Laylaniz.
Way to go Michelle! Bigger and greater things are in store for you!
