In April 2024, Lateisha arrived at Bronx Homes with her two daughters, Leilani and Layla, while pregnant with her son, Xavier, due on August 17, 2024. Shortly after their arrival, Lateisha was connected with prenatal services at Lincoln Hospital, where her journey took a challenging turn.
At her first prenatal appointment, Lateisha was diagnosed with both preeclampsia and eclampsia. This serious condition led to her hospitalization for 1.5 weeks in June, as her doctors determined she needed close monitoring due to unstable blood pressure. During this time, a dedicated case manager from Good Counsel remained in constant communication with Lateisha, worried about her well-being and that of her children.
Despite Lateisha's plan to leave the hospital after just one night, the case manager knew this was not feasible. After confirming with the hospital’s social worker, it became clear that Lateisha was planning to discharge herself against medical advice. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the case manager spoke to her about the importance of her health for her children’s sake, assuring Lateisha that her daughters were in good hands. They arranged regular FaceTime calls, allowing Lateisha to stay connected and informed about Leilani and Layla’s daily activities and care.
During her hospitalization, the Bronx Homes staff prepared meals for the girls, organized daily routines, and even took turns caring for them, including doing their hair. Lateisha was able to call home anytime for updates, which brought her comfort during a stressful time.
When Lateisha was discharged, she was grateful for the support she received. However, her health issues persisted, leading to a second hospitalization for 2.5 weeks. This time, the Bronx Homes team was well-prepared. They had established a round-the-clock schedule for caring for the girls, ensuring they received the love and attention they needed while Lateisha focused on her recovery.
The daily routine included getting Leilani and Layla dressed and ready in the morning, followed by a meeting with the case manager where the girls could connect with their mom via FaceTime. Emotions ran high as they missed her, but the staff was committed to making this transition easier for everyone. Lunches were prepared for the girls, and after a nap, they enjoyed story time and play.
The staff went above and beyond, even working on potty training for Leilani, who was set to start school in the fall. Every aspect of the children’s care was documented meticulously, ensuring their wellness was a priority. Throughout this time, Lateisha stayed in close communication with the team, which helped her feel secure in relying on Good Counsel for her family’s needs.
This entire experience exemplifies the mission of Good Counsel, showcasing the power of communication, collaboration, and compassion. In recognition of their outstanding efforts, the Bronx team received the Shining Star Award at the September 2024 All Staff Meeting, celebrated for their exceptional care and support.
